Levonelle vs ellaOne: Which Emergency contraceptive is right for you?

Regardless of how cautious a woman is, she may find herself in a situation where she requires emergency contraception. Perhaps her regular method of contraception has failed, or she has engaged in unprotected sex. She is at risk of an unwanted pregnancy for whatever reason.

If this occurs, you can use a type of emergency contraception known as "the morning-after pill." EllaOne and Levonelle are the two most commonly used emergency contraception pills in the United Kingdom.

Levonelle

Levonelle is the original'morning after pill,' which you can take up to 72 hours after unprotected sex to avoid pregnancy. It is a hormonal emergency contraceptive tablet with a single dose.

If you have Levonelle on hand, you can avoid the stress and inconvenience of seeing your doctor on short notice. It also ensures that the morning-after pill can be taken immediately after unprotected sex for maximum effectiveness. Levonelle is a one-time use medication. Women prefer it if they have unprotected sex or are concerned that their regular contraception will fail because they forgot to take a contraceptive tablet or have a torn condom. Assume you take the pill 72 hours after having sex. The likelihood of it being successful in averting an unplanned pregnancy in that situation is 95%.

Levonelle works because it contains the synthetic hormone levonorgestrel. It prevents the ovaries from producing eggs, leaving the sperm with nothing to fertilise. The pill has a dual effect; if an egg has already been released, it helps prevent sperm from fertilising it. In short, Levonelle regulates the release of eggs from the ovaries and prevents a released egg from fertilising or attaching to the womb lining.

To get the most out of Levonelle, take it as soon as possible, preferably within 12 hours. The importance of Levonorgestrel (generic Levonelle) is determined by how soon you take it after unprotected sex, such as:

Within the first 24 hours: 95% effective

       Between 24 and 48 hours: 85% effective

       Between 48 to 72 hours: 58% effective

If you take levonorgestrel after 72 hours of unprotected sexual activity, it may have no effect and may not achieve the desired result. If you are late, consult your doctor, or use the EllaOne emergency contraception tablet as an alternative. EllaOne is a highly effective contraceptive tablet that can be used up to 5 days after unprotected sex.

EllaOne

EllaOne is a more recent emergency contraceptive pill. In many cases, it is more effective than Levonelle.

EllaOne contains Ulipristal Acetate, which alters the activity of your natural hormones to delay ovulation. EllaOne makes it much more difficult for a sperm to fertilise an egg, thereby protecting you from pregnancy. Ulipristal Acetate is a progesterone receptor rectifier that is selective. It modifies the activity of the naturally occurring hormone progesterone. It acts on the progesterone receptors in the body. It leads them to believe that there are higher levels of circulating progesterone than there are. As a result, Ulipristal tricks the body into thinking ovulation has already occurred, causing ovulation to be delayed or completely prevented.

EllaOne has a 95% success rate up to 120 hours after intercourse. So, if you take the morning-after pill very soon after unprotected sex, it makes no difference which type you take. EllaOne may be more effective if it was more than 12 to 24 hours ago.

Up to 12 hours after unprotected intercourse, both Levonelle and ellaOne are equally effective (95% fruitful). However, Levonelle's productivity begins to decline 48 hours after intercourse, dropping to 58% effectiveness.

The main difference between Levonelle and EllaOne is the time frame in which it can be taken. Levonelle provides you with a 72-hour grace period. EllaOne, on the other hand, gives you much more peace of mind because you can take it up to 5 days after unprotected sex. If taken within 24 hours of unprotected sex, EllaOne is nearly 2.5 times more effective than Levonorgestrel.

Levonelle's effectiveness begins to wane after 12 hours of unprotected sex, whereas EllaOne retains its 95% effectiveness rate until the end of the fifth day.
